Hiking Killarney Provincial Park

Jason and I wanted to take a short trip over a long weekend. We decided to go visit relatives in the Northern Ontario town of Elliot Lake, as well as hike one of the trails in Killarney Provincial Park.

Killarney is a beautiful provincial park. Almost 500 square kilometers large, it features both short and easy trails, difficult trails, multi-day trails, alongside large camping grounds.

We heard from a friend that the most beautiful view of this Canadian landscape was from the peak of La Cloche Range, called “The Crack”. Rated as a 4-hour moderate-difficult hike, we decided to see the view for ourselves!

From the start, Jason thought it would be a good idea to get walking sticks. After all, who knew what type of challenges lied ahead, and we wanted to make sure that we were prepared for our mid-afternoon journey.

The biggest hurdle was climbing the rocks all the way up to “The Crack”.

Great sturdy hiking shoes made the journey more pleasant and safer as the rocks can be quite slippery. We even took a few breaks to admire the lake and took some pictures of our natural surroundings.

Once we finally made it to the top, we took our time to rest, recharge with a light lunch and headed back down after an hour or so.

While the journey up was challenging, the way back was confusing. Make sure to follow the trail as best as you can and if in doubt, ASK. There is always some hiker in the area, and for those who decide to do this for the first time, don’t take your map for granted. It can really serve when you get lost in your tracks.

Once we ended our hike, we spent the rest of the weekend with Jason’s aunt and uncle in Elliot Lake. His aunt who is a great adventurist and nature lover decided to show us around, starting out with the Hiking Trails at Sherriff Creek.

Then we went up to the Fire Tower Lookout and admired the view until it was time to go home for supper.

All in all, we really enjoyed our weekend up North and hope to make it back again in the near future to check out more hiking trails at Killarney Park.
